Preparing for Takeoff

Among common questions we receive about our trip, the most common is where we’ll actually be traveling and staying. I for one had no idea how large Mexico was until we began planning and booking travel plans. Below is our itinerary for the trip and some of our goals for our stay in each city so you can get to know them along with us!
  • June 19-21 Puebla/Jonacatepec
    • We’re keeping our plans for this leg of the trip a little surprise for our readers, but we have something special planned. Stay tuned!
  • June 28-July 4: Isla de Holbox
    • Main objective is to appreciate the beaches
    • Flamingo sighting?

Due to the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the world in COVID as we’ve come to know it, we’re well aware that making plans for group tours and visits has been difficult. We’re remaining flexible and open to changes and new opportunities as they arise. We’re just excited to take it all in, from the mezcal to the flamingos!

Palabra del dia:

Atrapasueños | dream catcher

For me, planning for this trip began during a snowstorm in Indianapolis that shut down school for nearly an entire week. Dreaming about the sun coming through fluttering papel picado over cobblestone streets,  adventuring through ancient ruins and bustling textile markets, or even the idea of laying on the beach all seemed too good to be true after a year of feeling landlocked by a deadly virus, canceled plans, government shutdowns, chaos and disappointment. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude that the post offices were even open in February so that I could get my passport for the first time (!!!) At each step along the way as Hannah and I researched, planned, and prepared, it took a lot of faith that our locked-down, mask-hidden world would again someday open back up, and suddenly, miraculously, it has. Gracias a Dios,  Hannah and I were both vaccinated against Covid in March, and travel restrictions continue to be lifted more and more around the globe each day. I’m filled with gratitude for God’s timing that allowed us to travel as safely as we can, but also be able to experience as much of Mexico as possible at this time. So much of this season of Covid teaching has been a rollercoaster of despair and hope, and planning for this trip has mirrored that ride, too. We’re setting sail tomorrow morning anchored in hope and emoción, knowing full well what a gift it is to be able to explore the world again.

While a lot of our plans have changed or rearranged, I’ve already learned just how much I don’t know about the world already. I’m in that half-giddy, half-daunted pre-travel phase at the moment, just reminding myself to go into the world with eyes and ears open, my disposable camera ready, and praying my conversational Spanish will kick in when I need it to.

 ¡Hasta la próxima vez!
