Educator: a person who provides instruction or education; a teacher.
While Google will tell you that the definition of an educator is a person who provides instruction, we will tell you that we learn from our students EVERY SINGLE DAY. They educate us! And many times their knowledge, stories, and perspective are more powerful than any lesson that we could prepare for them. But let’s be honest here, teaching is not always glorious. It is challenging, exhausting, and will sometimes take down even the strongest. Sometimes we need a bit of rejuvenation or remembering our why and purpose.

We teach 165 multilingual scholars in urban Indianapolis, IN — most of whom are Mexican American. Through teaching, we have learned SO much about Mexican and Mexican American culture. But we are lifelong learners here, so we are always wanting to learn more. Over 21 days we will make our way through eight different cities/towns in Mexico to learn more about the places our students and their families come from and the culture and customs that they teach us about on a daily basis.
While this trip doesn’t look exactly like it would if we weren’t still amidst a global pandemic, we know that we will grow, learn, and recenter ourselves throughout the trip. As educators, lifelong learners, and global citizens, we’re always working towards exploring the planet with a posture of curiosity and humility. We’re on this journey to better understand and serve our students, as well as personally gain a deeper appreciation of the complexity and beauty of Mexican culture and history. We’re ready with bags packed and eyes open for the field trip of a lifetime!
